Between the pandemic and politics, we could all use a laugh, which is why comedy clubs are well-appreciated these days. And one of the most prominent names in Las Vegas comedy was appreciated recently when Jimmy Kimmel was honored with a Key to the Strip.

The former Vegas resident opened Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club at the Linq Promenade in 2019 before it was forced to shut down when COVID-19 closures went into effect. While most similar venues on and around the Strip reopened in 2020 or 2021, this one came back to life again on November 3 with comedy headliners including Luenell and Gina Brillon.

Inside the club on November 11, Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom presented Kimmel with his key and a proclamation from the county declaring Jimmy Kimmel Day.

“As a kid who grew up here in Las Vegas, it is a great honor,” Kimmel said. “I’m excited to get the key to the [Strip]. I hope it works. I’m going to be testing it on your homes.”

Looking at the large ceremonial key, he told the Weekly, “It doesn’t look like it’s going to fit in any of the doors, so I’m a little bit concerned. But you know how when you get a key copied and it never works the first time? I’m going to go back and make sure this one actually works.”

The moment was a long time coming for the entertainer and host of nearly 20-year-strong late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live. Las Vegas provided several early experiences for Kimmel—he worked in radio while in high school and was the host of a Sunday night interview show on UNLV’s college station.

Naturally, supporting today’s rising comedians is important to him.

“I love seeing local comics. Of course there are a lot of comics from out of town, but I get a particular kick out of seeing someone who grew up here succeeding and working in these comedy clubs,” he said.

Kimmel joins a list of entertainers and celebrities that have been honored with a Key to the Strip, including Tiësto, Guy Fieri and Katy Perry, who recently received her key over the summer.

“I should have gotten the key before Katy Perry. I grew up here. I’m older than she is,” Kimmel joked. “Let’s just say it’s sorely overdue.”
