TV review: Love and theft mix in lively drama ‘The Catch’

Image
Stylish drama: Catch The Catch on ABC.

Three stars

The Catch Thursdays, 10 p.m., ABC.

Producer Shonda Rhimes has built such a successful brand for herself at ABC with the popular dramas Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder that any new show from her ShondaLand production company comes with heightened expectations for attention-grabbing hooks, outlandish plot twists and juicy performances. The Catch, executive-produced by Rhimes and overseen by Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy producer Allan Heinberg, features all of those elements, but it’s much breezier and more lighthearted than Rhimes’ other shows, more of a caper than a heavy melodrama.

The Killing’s Mireille Enos stars as one of those only-on-TV professionals, a high-priced private investigator who runs a firm with the resources of a well-funded government agency. She’s great at catching thieves and frauds, but she’s blindsided when she discovers that her fiancé (Peter Krause) is himself a con artist who has disappeared with all her money and confidential information about her clients. The cat-and-mouse game between the former lovers is playful and fun, and Enos and Krause give it just the right amount of real emotion. The first episode sets up a storyline with limited long-term potential, but it’s entertaining and stylish enough to be worth following to see where it leads.
