“Girls are throwing their clothes on stage.” That’s what a taller friend of mine said to me at the start of Mac DeMarco’s poolside show at the Hard Rock on Friday night. I can’t confirm or deny it, because from my vantage point, I could only see a giant sea of people, cheers erupting as the king of Jizz Jazz made his way onto the stage.

Reminiscing about the first time he played Vegas—when only four or five people showed—he stood before the crowd, his career strikingly different. “Now there’s a lot of people. It’s kinda cool.”

Even without DeMarco's chill-dude persona, the band's mix of sweet, romantic yacht-rock and stoner-funk could easily stand on its own. Add the charming, wacky stage antics—the ironic khaki fisherman's hat and vest and that signature gap-toothed smile—and there’s no wonder why DeMarco captures the hearts of men and women alike.

Before one of the best and perhaps most recognizable tracks from DeMarco’s catalog, “Ode to Viceroy,” the singer introduced his brother Hank, who then crowdsurfed his way into the pool during the song. The band’s guitar licks were perfectly fluid and bright, like half-melted Starbursts, accompanied by chocolaty basslines and wisftful percussion. “’Cause honey I’ll smoke ya ‘til I’m dying,’” DeMarco sang during the ballad of his favorite brand of cigarettes. “Hankie?” a concerned DeMarco yelled into the mic at the end of the track. His brother was safe, however, likely arguing with the security guard not to kick him out.

Before that we got a cover—“Reelin’ in the Years,” by Steely Dan, and later, for the encore, a strange, shirtless cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s “Harley David Son of a Bitch.”

But the most memorable moment came after closing song “Still Together,” when DeMarco crowd surfed around the entire perimeter of the pool, fans carrying him like royalty by his appendages, marching him through onlookers and looping back up to the stage. Upon his grand return, there was no question that he was the ultimate everyman that night. Mac DeMarco is the kind of guy everyone wants to know, or wants to be.
