Las Vegas Weekly named best overall publication at Nevada Press Association Awards

And that’s just the beginning

We don’t usually spend our Saturday nights in Elko, but on September 28, Las Vegas Weekly headed north for the 2013 Nevada Press Association Awards, the annual honors recognizing the best journalism in the Silver State.

And the Weekly hardly left empty-handed. Far from it, the Weekly and sister publications the Las Vegas Sun, VEGAS INC andLas Vegas Magazine and combined to win 96 awards, including 46 first-place journalism honors, more than any other media company in Nevada.

In the urban weekly category, the Weekly was named best overall publication, an award that honors both editorial and advertising. Entertainment columnist John Katsilometes was named outstanding journalist, and Andrea Domanick was named journalist of merit, an award for promising reporters with less than five years of professional experience.

What else? Domanick took best business feature story, editor Sarah Feldberg won for best explanatory journalism, managing editor Spencer Patterson took the award for best critical writing and Kristen Peterson won for best entertainment writing. J. Patrick Coolican won best sports feature story, and Steve Marcus won for best sports photograph.

The Weekly was also honored in online categories, with its website taking first place in its class and Andrea Domanick and Leila Navidi winning the award for best multimedia story.

Of course, we’re not resting on our shiny new laurels. We’re back at it already, creating the kind of stories that will win next year’s awards.

Congratulations to all the journalists and publications honored in Elko. See you in 2014.
