Freak out! Clark County is getting a new area code

Clark County’s new 725 area code goes into effect June 3.

Like it or not, Las Vegas will soon be getting another area code. Here’s what you need to know to survive the change with your sanity intact:

We’re running out of 702 numbers in Clark County. The new area code, 725, will allow new telephone numbers to be issued, so we don’t have to resort to, say, carrier pigeons.

Starting June 3, all new phone customers will get numbers with the new code. If you already have a 702 number, you get to keep it (and feel slightly superior).

You have to start dialing the area code on May 3, so update your devices now or prepare for lots of annoying automated responses.

This is Nevada’s third area code. Until 1999, the entire state had 702, but population growth in Southern Nevada meant a 775 area code was approved for everything outside of Clark County. Even more reason to feel slightly superior about that 702 number.
