Cars fly from the Strip in new trailer for ‘Jason Bourne’

If you watched last weekend’s Super Bowl, you might’ve noticed the new trailer for Jason Bourne, the fifth movie in the series about a rogue CIA operative. It’s notable for actor Matt Damon’s return to the role and franchise, having sat out 2012’s Bourne Legacy.

But for Las Vegans, it’s also momentous because it was shot here in town—specifically, on the Strip. Last month’s mysterious film shoots were largely assumed to be for the new Bourne flick—per a nondisclosure agreement, the Nevada Film Office couldn’t reveal any details on the project at the time—and were confirmed as such last Sunday when the trailer built to a climax featuring Damon’s character barreling through Strip traffic, resulting in vehicles being struck and flung in the air. (And how many times have any of us thought about doing the same thing?)

Strip-based carnage is no stranger to the big screen. It dates back to 1957’s The Amazing Colossal Man, continued with 1996’s Mars Attacks and 1997’s Con Air, and kicked back up again in the mid-to-late 2000s (Resident Evil: Extinction, 2012, Godzilla). And car-chase scenes aren’t new to Downtown Vegas, either—remember Sean Connery’s 007 weaving through an un-canopied Fremont Street in 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever?

As we reported last month, Clark County and the City of Las Vegas issued a record number of film permits in 2015, despite a lack of tax-abatement funds typically used to lure movie, commercial, TV and other film projects.
