Jo Dee Messina has quite the resume. Since her debut in 1996 she has managed nine number one singles on the Billboard country music charts and has been nominated for a Grammy. With five albums already under her belt, she is set to release her sixth, Unmistakable, in early 2010. Offering a sneak peek of the album, Messina’s Music Room Series tour will land at the House of Blues on Monday. The Weekly chatted with country star about what fans can expect from the show and what makes her pick up the phone when strangers call.

Tell us about the new album you have coming out next year.

The first single comes out in January. I cut 21 sides, so we put 11 songs together in order to see if they kind of meshed. It just smacks you in the face with the first three songs. There’s just so much going on there. There’s the break-up song; there’s the inspirational song; there’s the “I’m in love” song; and there’s “That’s God” – the first single. There’s something on it for everybody.

How is it different from your past albums?

I’ve done a lot of song writing for this record – more than records past. It’s a cleaner sound. It’s not over produced; it’s pretty simplified. Even the songs that rock hard sound like a live band versus studio stacking of instruments.

You had your first child back in January. How has motherhood affected your music?

Well, I’m still as spicy as ever! The only impact it has on this record is the song “That’s God.” I took my son for a walk up in Canada in July, and there’s a mountain right in front of us – so close it looked like you could reach out and touch it – and it had snow on it. It’s 90 degrees! At the bottom of the mountain was this glacial lake. It was turquoise, but you could see the fish swimming and you could see right down to the bottom. It was amazing! I looked at my son and I said, “Look Noah, that’s God right there,” and my keyboard player was like. "We gotta write that!” So [my son] inspired that song on the record, and I’m sure he’ll inspire more to come.

As a performer, what would you say is the worst kind of audience: the mellow, unresponsive kind or the crazy, obnoxious?

Oh, the people that don’t respond. Oh my God, it just takes all the energy out of you! If somebody’s a wise guy, let him be a wise guy. At this show especially, if somebody’s a wise guy, they’re going to be the star of the show, because we’ll just poke fun at ’em all night long. [At a concert,] I was talking about “That’s God,” and I said, “Oh, my keyboard player met me in the back of the bus after the show and said we needed to write that song,” and [a girl] yelled, “I’m sure that’s all you were doing in the back of the bus.” I was like, “Really? I’m talking about a song about God. You are so going to hell.”

As for The Music Room Series, what can fans expect to hear?

This tour is whatever the audience wants. We do a couple songs then we flip it over to the audience and they make requests, so no two shows are the same. Sometimes the audience just wants to hear the hits; sometimes people want to hear stuff from the new record. … Sometimes people want to hear Christmas songs or something patriotic. It’s whatever they want. That’s the magic of this show, there’s no set list.

It sounds very interactive. Speaking of which, I read that you gave your cell phone number out to fans via your SayNow account. What’s been the most bizarre call you’ve received?

Well, they introduce themselves and they’ll say, “Hey, this is so and so from Arizona,” and it’ll say, “Do you want to take the call?” You say yes and hit the button. One guy was like, “I think you’re hot!” and so [when it asked] “Do you want to take the call?” I pushed yes. And I said, “Dude, really? Is that what you had to say?’ And he’s like “Well…well…uhhh who’s this?” And I’m like, “It’s Jody. Who did you call?”

Have you noticed any themes of what fans want to talk about?

It was all across the board. It might be something like, “My mother says ‘hi!’” Or, “I saw you at this concert,” or “Do you remember me?” That’s the hardest thing. When they’re like, “Do you remember me? I’m the girl that was in the 3rd row at that fair you did about six years ago.” I’m just like, “Oye oye oye!” Or they’ll say, “Remember when you brought me on stage?” I’m like “Oooh, I bring so many people on stage! Nope don’t remember you at all.” [Laughs.]

What inspired you to give your number out initially?

I just really wanted a chance to get to know the fans. I wanted to hear their stories and how they related to the songs and what songs they were kind of drawn to. So, I just wanted to give them a voice really, and that was my way of doing it.

The big news out here right now is that Garth Brooks is coming out of retirement for a residency at the Wynn. Would you ever consider making a similar move and become a Vegas mainstay?

Hell yeah! If the money was right you’re damn straight I would! Giiiiirl, come on. You know how much he’s getting paid?

True, and it is Steve Wynn.

No kiddin’… Is he still standing up on top of that hotel by the way?
