Three great rums to help you celebrate National Rum Day

Sabrina Chapman

Ah, rum. A single-syllable word that instantly evokes sandy beaches, sun-kissed cheeks and waves tickling your toes. No wonder the spirit has its own holiday. In honor of National Rum Day on August 16, we suggest these three rums for your sampling pleasure. Try them in a classic cocktail, on the rocks or however makes your backyard feel like paradise.

    • Don Q Cristal Rum, $15.99

Named after Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote, Don Q is the best-selling rum in Puerto Rico. The award-winning white rum Cristal is made with sugar cane and aged in American white oak. It has a clean, light flavor that makes it ideal for cocktails.

Drink it: In a cocktail. Blend it into a piña colada, stir it in a daiquiri, or add it to muddled mint and fresh fruit for a refreshing mojito.

    • Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, $29.99

The hula girl on Sailor Jerry’s label isn’t just another broad. She’s the artwork of Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, an iconic tattoo artist born in Reno. As for the spice, expect cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla.

Drink it: Raise a (shot) glass, or mix with cola and ice cream to make a Jerry Float. (Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum pin-up girls will be serving the boozy treats at the Double Down August 16 from 10 to 11:30 p.m.)

    • Brugal Extra Viejo Rum, $32.99

This brown Caribbean rum is distilled from fermented molasses and blended from rums aged up to eight years in whiskey and bourbon barrels. Complex layers of dark fruit, roasted almond and a slightly viscous smoky finish make this Dominican rum a savory after-dinner sipper.

Drink it: On the rocks with a cigar.
