Before hipsters ruled popular culture, there was a breed of youth known as emo kids, and Fall Out Boy was their champion, carrying their subgenre to mainstream success before going on indefinite hiatus in 2009. Now a little older and less visible, the emo kids showed they’re still just as passionate about their music Saturday night, when Fall Out Boy made its triumphant return to the House of Blues.

With a capacity under 2,000, HOB provided an intimate setting for the band, which will play arenas and festivals throughout the summer and fall. Fall Out Boy stripped its sound down for the occasion, cutting out the synths heard frequently on “Save Rock and Roll” and steering clear of any sonic clash between the band’s hard-rock past (see: “Take This to Your Grave” and “From Under Cork Tree”) and its current heavy-pop sound.

The set spanned all five Fall Out Boy albums and included favorites like “Tell Mick He Made My List of Things to Do,” “Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy,” “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down,” “Dance, Dance,” “Thnks fr th Mmrs,” “I Don’t Care,” along with tracks from April comeback album Save Rock and Roll.

Though just six years have passed since the height of Fall Out Boy’s popularity, pop music has changed in the interim, and their angsty songs about rejection and unrequited love almost sound rebellious against today’s pop backdrop. Even bassist Pete Wentz, dressed in what looked like a long leather apron over flannel, waxed nostalgic for earlier days: “We were listening to the radio, and there’s just a lot of fake sh*t out there. If this album sounds angry, it’s because we were angry when we wrote it.”

Wentz also railed against Auto-Tune, tabloids and fame between songs but came off on the preachy side, especially considering his former arc on One Tree Hill. Still, it didn’t spoil the show for fans who screamed every word until the 10 p.m. all-ages curfew kicked in.
