MYSTIC MONA: Head Trip

Tips to soothe a little headache sufferer

Mona

I would really like to know how to help my 8-year old daughter get rid of her daily headaches. Of course, it would help to know what is causing them. She's seen five doctors, all with different expertise, and we still don't know what's wrong. We've been looking for an answer for over two years now. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

All ABOUT MY GIRL

Dear All About My Girl,

I always encourage people to make sure they have a traditional doctor overseeing their particular medical problem. Since you have several, I will tell you what the cards say for your daughter.

Digestion challenges and related food allergies are what the cards are telling me. I would like you to try a very basic and easy-to-digest diet for her. It doesn't have to be bland, but make sure it includes organic fruits and veggies. Try only fruit in the morning before she has anything else—especially apples, pears and plums. Steer her away for the time being from cereals (except old-fashioned cooked oatmeal with real maple syrup or honey, if she likes it sweet) for the next couple of weeks. Just try eliminating regular white sugar and any wheat products. (You'll be surprised how many foods are made with wheat!) Please avoid any fast-food restaurants for the next few weeks, too.

Have her drink lots of distilled water and take a children's vitamin without iron (after she's eaten something substantial). Try this for the next few weeks and see what happens. Focus on what she can have as opposed to what she cannot have. The cards say the headaches will be gone within the next 11 weeks.

Besides the headaches, make sure she looks forward to spending time with her girlfriends or schoolmates, with activities on the weekends or after school. See if you can rally other mothers with their daughters for a movie or ice-skating day. There are benefits for you both there.

What About Our Son?

I have a child who is currently undergoing treatment for a mental condition. He's been diagnosed bipolar and manic-depressive and I just want to know if he'll ever overcome this. It is so straining on my entire family and it hurts me to see him having to go through this.

MY SON'S MOM (AND DAD)

Dear Gifted Parents,

I feel really bad that your family has to deal with this. However, to some extent, your child is using the attention to his advantage (and you know what I mean by that).

It's really important that you get him involved with other kids. Part of the problem is he doesn't feel like he's like other kids, or he doesn't include himself to participate with other kids. Get him involved with karate—anything that is strenuous but also makes him control his mind would be really good for him. His condition will dramatically improve if he feels somehow included with kids his own age.

Remember, you two are his parents because you can handle him. One more thing: It's usually very intelligent children that are diagnosed with this condition so getting his IQ tested would also be a good way of adding to his confidence. He may learn so fast that he gets bored and then disruptive. I want you to engage your own intuition when dealing with him—know when he's really having an episode or just demanding attention. Also, sometimes very intuitive children are diagnosed with your son's condition because they are very aware.

Yes, he will learn to deal with how his mind processes information, especially if you focus on his capabilities and potential. Don't let him use his condition as an excuse to not do his best.

Destiny Calls

I'm 18 years old and still in high school. I've had a lot of medical problems in the past and missed school because I was sick. I was supposed to graduate last year, but I'm back at school as a fifth-year senior trying to graduate. It's hard to picture myself in any kind of career. I just wanted to know if I'm going to accomplish anything in my life.

SEEKING GUIDANCE

Dear Seeking Guidance,

I'm congratulating you in advance for your graduation in June!

You're spending way too much time alone. It's very important for you to make some new friends and start trying new things. Make a friend of change. Yes, you will have a very successful career and eventually your own business.

Start studying and finding out how the stock market works. Figure out how rich people got that way because money will be a major part of your daily work. You will have a knack for knowing which stock will go up or down and your money intuition will be so good that people will seek you out for advice someday.

Prepare to be very good at this because you'll be amazing—oh yes, (need I say?) very wealthy!
