Marc Jacobs hearkens back to classier era

Jennifer Henry

Marc Jacobs is a modern mod with his Breakfast at Tiffany's take on the perfectly boxy coats with three-quarter-length sleeves in muted matte taffetas, hemmed just at the knee. Polite and demure, Jacobs' ready-to-wear is fit for the young lady with a distinct sense of decorum and a penchant for understated elegance. That said, even spray-tanned exotic dancers with platinum extensions and Lycra fetishes are hot for his Sophia bag.

Perhaps that vast appeal is why the new boutique in the Forum Shops has been so well received. Since its soft opening Thanksgiving weekend, store manager Kenneth Harvey has welcomed a steady stream of fans. Set up as a proper boutique, individual pieces from his 2005 Resort collection hang in quiet repose on brushed-nickel rods. Casually staged on ashen sycamore shelves is an impressive array of Jacobs' bags, including his Venetia, Cammie and Blake designs in zebra- and leopard-pony hair prints with matching python-edged mouse flats, each a Vegas exclusive.

Softly illuminated display cases house the complete collection of Marc Jacobs watches and a healthy sampling of his popular line of sunglasses. Among his newest ventures, Jacobs' timepieces recall a less ostentatious era, when a slim alligator strap and sprinkling of diamonds was all the bling required. Marc Jacobs' sunglasses are of the weighty, oversized Jackie-O variety, perfect for going oh-so-stylishly incognito.

With plush carpeting, Christian Liagre's sleek bench in front and crisp mirrored walls that glide open to reveal dressing rooms finished in rustic ivories, comparisons to a classic music box are irresistible. Originally conceived as a women's collection boutique only, numerous inquires from Jacobs' male patrons prompted the addition of key pieces from his men's collection, including their corduroy suit or pant available in eight colors—yet another Las Vegas exclusive. What is now only a smattering of men's accessories—ostrich belts, Jacobs' leather oxfords and cashmere athletic socks—will become a more substantial offering in the new year.

The location just opposite Harry Winston was chosen for its remarkable window space. Marc Jacobs occupies four outdoor windows facing the Strip that promise to be fully dressed throughout the seasons and two indoor windows, one running footage from Jacobs' newest collection 24/7 while the other displays his delicate cocktail dresses and fledging fine jewelry line. Focused on offering a collection of exclusive exotics tailored for the Las Vegas market, Marc Jacobs knows what it takes to sell mod.
