Big Bad Zero

Imagination America (4 stars)

The third album from Nick Mattera, Dave Meeks, Dan Gauthier and Rob Whited demonstrates their rock-solid muscianship without a single weak track on their 11-song disc. Everything's here, from hot guitar licks and driving beats to catchy hooks and lyrics. Catch them December 17 at the Hurricane Bar and Grill before you have to pay a scalper sometime in the future.

Fox in a Box: Featuring Pam Grier (R) (3 stars)

$29.95

It seems impossible, but Pam Grier has been making movies for 35 years, from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls to Showtime's The L Word. Foxy Brown, Coffy, Sheba Baby represent the early '70s, when she was the undisputed queen of blaxploitation. Much like her character in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, Grier persevered and blossomed into America's answer to Sophia Loren. This set includes commentary and cleaned-up audio and video tracks.

The Beautiful Country (R) (4 stars)

$24.96

This emotionally charged drama traces a teen's journey from Vietnamese to Texas in search of the American father he's never known. Binh is a study in dedication as he and a much younger half-brother endure a Malaysian detention camp, passage aboard a fetid refugee ship and forced labor in New York City. The scenes in which he learns the story of his GI dad are among the most poignant and heartfelt in recent memory. Nick Nolte's brief appearance couldn't be more touching.

Big Bad Mama: Special Edition (R) (3 stars)

Death Race 2000: Special Edition (R) (2 stars)

Rock 'n' Roll High School: Special Edition (PG) (4 stars)

$19.99

Roger Corman's Big Bad Mama, Death Race 2000 and Rock 'n' Roll High School overflow with fast-paced action, mindless violence, gritty dialogue and plenty of T&A. In Mama, Angie Dickinson plays the bank-robbing mother of two daughters who've dedicated themselves to seduction. Death Race imagines a futuristic contest in which drivers score points for running people down. High School was influenced by any one of a dozen '50s-era juvenile-delinquent movies. They're all a hoot.
