The Venetian Antes Up

Upscale poker room caters to the player

Paul Szydelko

The city's newest tribute to the poker craze is at The Venetian, which recently opened a nearly 11,000-square-foot, 39-table poker room. The room features rich leather and wood tones, contemporary styling, adjustable chairs with wheels, 21 large-screen plasma televisions and food service. Automatic card shufflers at every table allow for faster-moving games. If there's a waiting list, a player can check out a pager so they can visit other areas of the hotel. Dealers spread games of Texas hold 'em, stud and Omaha with a wide range of limits. The smoke-free room also includes a high-stakes area with seven tables, two lounges, butler service and gourmet dining. Daily tournaments are available. Prominent players such as Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak, Howard Lederer, veteran Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Chip Reese and Annie Duke were invited to a special event to open the elegant room.
