The One-Minute Music Critic

In a streaming interview about new iTunes Christmas single "A Great Big Sled," Brandon Flowers says he hopes it will clear up the "misconception" that The Killers are "cold-hearted music machines." Of course, he's wearing rock-star sunglasses indoors as he speaks, much the way his band cloaks itself in more self-important Sam's Town grandeur on what might have been a merry little ditty about rolling around "like a kid in the snow." Synth-forward hooks abound, but histrionic lyrics about the Hollywood Hills, "little boys with action toys for brains," and girls with "makeup and dreams of wonderland" make it easy to forget the tune has something to do with the holidays. Download and decide for yourself—if not to hear the guest spot by ex-Curve vocalist Toni Halliday then because all proceeds from the 99-cent track benefit the African-disease-fighting Red Campaign, a cause that suggests The Killers might be warming up this winter after all.
