THE CONSUMER: An ‘Experiential Shopping Destination’

Metropark is growing here and nationwide

Jennifer Henry

The brainchild of Hot Topic founder Orv Madden and retail guru Lawrence Tanenbaum, Metropark is more than a clothing store. Tanenbaum defines it as an "experiential shopping destination." With sleek modern interiors, urban art exhibitions and live DJ sets, Metropark has cornered the better jeans and tees market.

The first Las Vegas boutique, located on the second floor of Fashion Show mall, opened in early November 2005, only the 10th store nationwide. Less than 12 months later, Metropark has more than doubled its holdings, with 14 new stores all over the U.S., including another Vegas location in the revamped Miracle Mile Shops at Aladdin, launched two weeks ago.

Miracle Mile store co-manager Raymond Cruz is awestruck by the location's immediate success. "Since the moment we opened the doors, the response has been amazing." Cruz is enthusiastic about the company's growing profile. "We were just listed in Fortune and mentioned in The Wall Street Journal."

Metropark's trend-sensitive selection and sophisticated presentation is the key to their success. Though the chain carries recognizable brands such as Ed Hardy, True Religion and Harajuku Lovers, they're picky about the pieces each boutique carries. Cruz assures, "Each store has its own collection." And unlike other national retailers, Metropark doesn't buy in uber-bulk. "When a piece sells out,it's pretty much gone for good."

To ensure you get your pick of this season's selection, stop in Saturday evening and enjoy an energy drink from the lounge cooler and a live vinyl set by DJ Chuck Fader, and peruse the latest Artist Print Project. Oh yeah, they've got those super-skinny Rock and Republic jeans, too.
