Rhymes and reason

Spencer Patterson

Vegas bands accounted for seven of 10 slots in Friday’s Amplify!! finals at Jillian’s, but even before a note had been played, one stood out. Way out. Or, more accurately, its fans did. Faces painted in the style of ICP-worshipping Juggalos, supporters of local rap-rockers Age ov Reason arrived early, mugged in front of the arcade venue with a sign advertising the group’s MySpace home, held aloft a championship belt and, just before AoR’s closing time slot, marched en masse toward the stage chanting the name of their favored entrant. Though Age did not place—the top three spots went, in order, to Los Angeles electro-ists Ultraviolet, local reggae-ska crew One Pin Short and Fort Worth, Texas, rockers the Kyle Sherman Band—they left a far more lasting impression on a bewildered and befuddled crowd.
