What we want in a first lady

John Katsilometes

Dawn Gibbons is pro-Wang.

Vera Wang, of course.

Nevada’s first lady and one of the state’s foremost fashion plates (whose famous Armani inaugural dress fairly overshadowed her husband’s inaugural galas at the Venetian and the Silver Legacy in Reno in January) is co-hosting the Cherry Blossoms in Bloom Fashion Show & Luncheon at Green Valley Ranch Resort’s Estancia Ballroom on September 14. As the event’s news release informs, Washington, D.C., “maven of fashion” Marsha Nelms will be presenting the latest apparel by Armani, Wang and Bob Mackie, among others. Ticket prices are $75 a head, or $750 for a table of 10 (which is still $75 a head, but no matter).

Joining Gibbons as honorary host is former Nevada Rep. Barbara Vucanovich. The event is to benefit the Clark County Young Republican Foundation’s Scholarship Fund. It is not Gibbons’ first philanthropic fashion statement. For the inaugural galas, she purchased the strapless Armani Bordeaux velvet gown (which many observers said made her look “frumpy”) with her own money, hopping on a 40-percent discount at the Bellagio’s Armani boutique that reportedly dropped the price from $10,000 to $6,000. That dress was subsequently donated to the Nevada State Museum’s First Ladies’ Collection, where it will live in perpetuity as a symbol of achievement for today’s young Republicans.
