The Weekly Playlist: Please, please, please, Morrissey

On his current tour, Morrissey has plucked a few Smiths gems from his past—“The Queen Is Dead,” “The Boy With the Thorn in His Side,” “How Soon Is Now?”—but we’d like to see more … a whole lot more. Yeah, yeah, we know Morrissey would hate this, but doesn’t he hate everything?

Spencer Patterson

1 “This Night Has Opened My Eyes” (Peel session, 1983) A live rendition would hold us over ’til a studio take finally sees the light of day.

2 “Reel Around the Fountain” (The Smiths, 1984) Hard to think of a better encore than the first cut from the first album Morrissey recorded.

3 “Asleep” (The Boy With the Thorn in His Side single, 1985) Picture the Pearl filled with a sea of lighters.

4 “I Want the One I Can’t Have” (Meat Is Murder, 1985) Kinda like this playlist, huh?

5 “Cemetry Gates” (The Queen Is Dead, 1986) Nothing screams Morrissey more than poppy songs about playing in graveyards.

6 “Bigmouth Strikes Again” (The Queen Is Dead, 1986) While we’re dreaming, how about getting Johnny Marr onstage to play the ringing guitar parts?

7 “Half a Person” (Louder Than Bombs, 1987) “And if you have five seconds to spare/Then I’ll tell you the story of my life.”

8 “Death of a Disco Dancer” (Strangeways, Here We Come, 1987) Released after The Smiths broke up and thus never performed live.

 With Kristeen Young. June 9, 8 p.m., $57. The Pearl, 942-7777.
