DID I SAY THAT?

A history of local slurs

Julie Seabaugh

Radio host Don Imus calling the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos” reminds me of the “Homer Defined” episode of The Simpsons, in which we learn that “to pull a Homer” means “to succeed despite idiocy.” I’ve tweaked that phrase. “To pull an Imus” means to say something stupid despite knowing better. Below, a quick look at locals who’ve pulled an Imus.

2006: Former Sheriff Bill Young on crime: “A lot of that crime is not reported to us as well as I’d like. I mean, I’m not going to hide behind it, it’s Hispanics.”

2005: Former Channel 13 weather forecaster Rob Blair in a taped segment: “For tomorrow, 60 degrees, Martin Luther Coon King Jr. Day, gonna see some temperatures in the mid-60s.”

2001: Former College of Southern Nevada executive Mike Meyer about a student: “She’s a nigger, and niggers are never on time.”

1998: Former Police Protective Association Vice President Dan Holley: He referred to Martin Luther King Jr. Day as “Martin Luther Coon Day.”
