Battle circles break out: Dance crews lay it out at the Palms

Joshua Longobardy

It was a turnout that surprised even the event’s promoter—some 200 young b-boys and b-girls gathered at the Rain nightclub in the Palms, its doors open to all ages for three hours on Thursday, May 17, for an afternoon of break-dancing.

There were two featured battles, one between ATN (from the Battle Born crew) and Bret the Threat (from the Rocksteady crew), and the other between Emma (from the Strip production Love) and her co-worker Silk, both of which took place on Rain’s circular dancing stage.

But the real excitement took place in the corners of the club, where spontaneous and inspired battle circles broke out throughout the afternoon and encapsulated such dynamic dancing that it became contagious. Few b-boys and b-girls from the various local crews represented at the event, including Knucklehead Zoo and Uncommon Alliance, didn’t jump into the circle and showcase their flava. It was all thrown by Red Bull energy drink, to promote their b-boy fantasy camp—called Beat Riders—and it was all good.
