Strange doings at the library

Shush the kids, it’s Almodovar time!

If the returning pirates, animated ogres and pregnant women offered by your local multiplex have you longing for something smart, sexy and subtitled, the Clark County Library at Flamingo and Maryland might have the antidote: a series of films by madcap Spanish provocateur Pedro Almodovar. Each film screens at 7 p.m. in the main theater:

JUNE 5 Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988, 98 minutes, R) Frequent Almodovar star Carmen Maura plays a popular Spanish actress who tries to win back her lover in a comedy of errors.

JUNE 12 Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990, 103 minutes, NC-17) A love story about a mental patient who stalks and kidnaps an ex-porn star. Features Antonio Banderas and Victoria Abril.

JUNE 19 The Flower of My Secret (1995, 103 minutes, R) A hack writer (Marisa Paredes) attempts to become a serious novelist; complications ensue.

JUNE 26 Live Flesh (1998, 101 minutes, R)Five people—including a junkie, a paralyzed cop and an ex-con—find their lives intertwined by romance, friendship and rivalry.
