Ever seen Thursday and Thrice in the same place at the same time?

Annie Zaleski

They’re easy to confuse, and not just because their names start with Th. Both formed in the late ’90s, released albums for Island and even toured together. Tips to tell them apart:

Origins

Thursday: Jersey’s fertile basement hardcore scene.

Thrice: A high school and a skate park in California.

Claim to fame

Thursday: One of the first bands to propel screamo into the mainstream; see “Cross Out the Eyes.”

Thrice: The quartet of socially conscious do-gooders has donated partial profits from its full-lengths to charity.

Sounds like

Thursday: At the Drive-In, Underoath. The live show now prominently features keyboards, adding danceable, new-wave flair to the band’s throttling.

Thrice: Explosions in the Sky, Nine Inch Nails. New double-disc matches guitar cloudbursts with electronic squelches, digital gloom and ambient beauty.

Thrice opening for Brand New, with Mewithoutyou. November 9, 8 p.m., $22-$27.
