[The Chops] A guide to essential comic skills

John Katsilometes

Carrot Top (real name: Scott Thompson) watches a lot of TV. So he was watching a news report about Lindsey Lohan getting busted, and her mug shot flashed across the screen. The veteran prop comic noticed the booking slate in front of Lohan’s sad face. Then he started musing: Lohan. Starlet. Arrest slate. Designer handbag ... and a prop was born. “Any Hollywood chick who gets busted should have a handbag that opens up like that and, flash! There’s the mug shot. Right when she’s arrested.” The Topper bought a simple handbag, cut an opening into it and fastened a small chalkboard inside. The bit lasts just moments in the show but should have a long life onstage, until wayward celebs stop infringing on the law. As Carrot top says, “It’s a great visual element—show and tell with liquor.”
