Large art-like objects!

Not long after you picked up this magazine—assuming you make a Thursday beeline for the nearest Weekly rack—the Las Vegas Arts Commission will have (presumably) voted on a large object to mark the entrance to the arts district. According to a city spokeswoman, the giant paint brush, by New Yorker Dennis Oppenheim, is the lead proposal. (Oppenheim’s other ideas are below; bottom left is the idea from the only local team in the running.) “But is it art?” a Sun headline asked of the proposals. But is that even the right question? Of course a giant paint brush isn’t art; it’s meant to reference art in an upbeat, municipally responsible way—it’s better than some wordy sign, gentle enough not to spook the voters and still lets you know you’re in an arts district. Adjust your expectations accordingly and it will be okay.
