MIX AND MATCH
Fashion talk with NYC export Megan Wilson

By Benedetta Pignatelli

Appearing this week: Megan Wilson, an urbane hipster ensconced in east Las Vegas. And apparently our styledar is rather solid, since Ms. Wilson tells us she was also the target of style investigation in her previous New York existence.

So who’s wearing you?

The shoes are Celine—I got them in Paris in July; the tights are H&M, got them in New York; the tank top is a basic Hanes, and it belongs to my ex-boyfriend. The necklace is Tibetan, and it’s a birthday present from a Bleecker Street boutique in New York. The shirt is from Elizabeth & James; the bracelets are from Mexico, a gift from a pack of girlfriends; the ring (on the right hand) is from Elsa Smith, a jewelry-designer friend in Vancouver. The other ring (left hand) is a Christmas present from a boyfriend. The “Bunny” bag (that’s supposed to sit like a bunny) is from Dolce & Gabbana. The sunglasses are from Marc Jacobs The hat is from Macy’s, and last but not least, my lovely real 5-carat diamond earrings.

What do you do, and when and how did you get to Las Vegas?

I’m a cocktail waitress at Blush nightclub at Wynn Las Vegas. I moved here in July 2006, to follow my boyfriend at the time, who now manages Tao Nightclub. We’re still friends. I bought a home in October that I’m currently renovating. After that, we will see what happens. I like to move around. In New York I worked as a fashion stylist and at the private Cipriani club on West Broadway, at Lotus and Lot 61.

As a migrating New Yorker, what’s your view on the state of style affairs in Las Vegas?

When I first moved here I thought people didn’t have any style, and I was angry, sarcastic and dark about it. But now after a year I can see that they actually do try; it’s just that there aren’t that many outlets that cater to a personalized style. Meaning it’s all serial chains, whether discount or deluxe. And people tend to buy a whole outfit, when ideally one would want to mix and match, something designer, something homemade. The recent opening of Barney’s, though, is indeed cause for hope and celebration, as they also carry semi-obscure designers.

And whom do you fancy?

Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Celine, Lanvin, YSL and Dolce & Gabbana.
