Beyond the Rope: Jennifer Harrington—The Body Artistic

Hometown: Santa Rosa, CA

Age: 27

Profession: Cocktail server, Body English

Profile: Like many women in Vegas, Harrington supported herself through college by cocktail serving. Now, with a dual degree in philosophy and art history under her belt (as well as an ample supply of jokes about her majors), she continues to lead a double life as a server and as the curator of her own gallery.

Why I do what I do: “It’s fulfilling, the fact that I got to work on the weekends and study all week long. It’s allowed me the time to open up a business. And I never need to go out and party; I get it all at work!”

Personal tidbit: Harrington’s Jennifer Marie Gallery opened last September at the Arts Factory and has since established a big-city reputation as a place for true art aficionados to visit the night before First Friday from 6-8 p.m. to preview the month’s art without the big crowd distractions. She believes in Vegas’ young art scene. “Is it challenging? Yes, but everything in Las Vegas is challenging.”

What I’m reading: Art In Theory: 1900 to 2000, a college textbook.

Latest accomplishment: Landed high-profile San Francisco artist Casey O’Connell, showing now. “People really connect with her work and see who she is without ever having met her.” O’Connell’s closing party is on Saturday, May 24, the afterparty at Downtown Cocktail Room, 7-10 p.m.

Quote: “Nobody can say there isn’t good art in Vegas. It’s right here! It’s at my gallery, Downtown!”
