Thundercat

Thundercat

MUSIC: THUNDERCAT The artist born Stephen Lee Bruner is a lot of things: a bassist, a singer, a songwriter, a producer, a Grammy winner, a former member of foundational LA thrash band Suicidal Tendencies and a denizen of the Star Wars universe (he played a “mod artist” who installed droid parts into humanoids, in the Disney+ limited series The Book of Boba Fett). But what Thundercat is, above all things, is funky. Over the course of several albums—most notably Kendrick Lamar’s celebrated To Pimp a Butterfly, to which he made substantial contributions, and his own terrific solo records Drunk and It Is What It Is—Thundercat has refined his mix of 1970s funk sauce, punk swagger, video game references and studio wizardry into a tonic that compels movement, from gentle head-bobbing all the way up through deep, committed hip action. 7 p.m., $35-$55, Brooklyn Bowl, ticketweb.com. –Geoff Carter

MUSIC: MAXWELL If you remain transfixed by the Stranger Things-sparked viral success of a 37-year-old Kate Bush track, you might want to revisit the British singer’s late ’80s song “This Woman’s Work,” and especially the beautifully delicate cover recorded by Maxwell for his MTV Unplugged album almost 10 years later. Since he first broke through as part of the neo-soul movement with the groove-heavy “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” fans have been clamoring for Maxwell to use his inimitable falsetto, and “This Woman’s Work” is the perfect showcase. It’s also become a favorite at his live shows, and the next three stops along his Night Tour—preceding the upcoming release of the trilogy-completing blacksummers’ Night album—are at Wynn Las Vegas. 8 p.m., & 7/29-7/30, $75-$225, Encore Theater, ticketmaster.com. –Brock Radke
