Who are broken spindles?

Actually, a more accurate question would be, “Who is Broken Spindles?,” since the band comprises exactly one person: Joel Petersen, better known as the bassist for Omaha, Nebraska, synth-pop outfit The Faint. On and off since 2001, Petersen has worked up his own batches of tunes—some sparse laptop compositions, others more rocking affairs—and released them, either through The Faint’s Saddle Creek Records or his own Kaput Pin imprint. Get a taste of his current sound by streaming “Red Face” and “Lights and Lives” from new LP Document Number One at myspace.com/brokenspindles. Or by checking out his show on Friday.

With XrayOK, Lanterns, Afghan Raiders. June 20, 10 p.m., $10-$12. Beauty Bar, 598-1965.
