Cyclocross is defined by a dictionary as “a bicycle race over a cross-country course, featuring steep hills, turns and sometimes muddy terrain, that occasionally requires a rider to carry the bicycle,” but it might be more accurately described by a couple of T-shirts spotted at the recent CrossVegas event: “Yes, I am one of those cyclocross people” and “Mud Beer Bikes.” The annual race, this year featuring two-time and current world champion Sven Nys of Belgium, is an occasionally raucous affair fueled by burritos and Sierra Nevada. Held the same week as the Interbike convention, the race follows a hilly course, being crossed here by a beer- and cutout-wielding fan during a break in the action.
