WHO: Delilah Krasch, director of CCSD’s early childhood department and a former pre-K teacher wants families to know about the services her department offers.

WHAT: In addition to enrolling more than 14,000 students in general education and special education pre-K programs across 600 classrooms, the early childhood department also provides a service called Child Find. “We bring students in whose families have concerns about developmental delays, and we provide a comprehensive evaluation to see if they need additional services. We do a health screening, audiology, speech, hearing and vision. It’s a full evaluation,” Krasch says. “The earlier we can intervene and get students in and receiving services, the better.”

WHY: Children have “prolific” brain development before age 5, Krasch says. The benefits of identifying developmental delays and providing supports prior to children becoming school age are countless, she adds. Studies have shown that students who attend pre-K with the appropriate supports have a higher likelihood of graduating high school and obtaining higher ed. They’ve also shown that those students have better health outcomes in the long-run.
