Sunset at the South Rim | Grand Canyon National Park | 5:30 p.m. | February 14, 2015
Watching the sun set over the Grand Canyon is as romantic as one could hope to get on Valentine’s Day. As I gazed out into the chasm with my boyfriend, I couldn’t help but notice something glimmering off to my left in a dumpster. A lonely balloon swayed in the breeze and read, “We’ll Miss You!” It was more beautiful and somber than anything I could have planned. I began taking photos and ignoring the sunset, to the dismay of other spectators. While I was wondering how it ended up here and who was being missed, a man walking by loudly whispered to his wife, “All this nature around, and she’s taking photos of a dumpster.”
