Meat-flavored chips? That’s right, Lay’s Do Us a Flavor contest is back with four new funky flavors: New York Reuben, Greektown Gyro, West Coast Truffle Fries and Southern Biscuits and Gravy.
Voting for the potato-chip company’s annual contest doesn't begin until July 27, but the four varieties showed up on shelves across the Valley earlier this week—so naturally we at the Weekly chowed down on some chips to give you our trusty recommendations.
So, read on for our Do Us a Flavor taste-test results (we asked staff members to rate each on a five-star scale), then go grab some bags of your own and decide which chip ranks supreme for you.
-
New York Reuben: 27/40 points
Packing all the requisite Reuben flavors into one tiny chip, the meaty sandwich-inspired variety took the Weekly Taste Test title.
• “A beautiful abomination. How did they get all the sandwich flavors in? Salty, sour, tangy, even tastes like rye bread. Evil?”
• “Cheddar & Sour Cream. Would not recommend to friends.”
• “Super fake but super delicious. I could easily crush a bag of these.”
• “Fine. I’m converted.”
-
West Coast Truffle Fries: 26/40 points
Hey, Lay’s: When our entire crew calls you out for copying one of your already-established flavors, you know you’ve screwed something up. Get back to that kitchen and give us our truffle flavor!
• “Sour Cream & Onion with a little extra funk on it. The most addictive and easy to eat of these flavors.”
• “I’m disappointed in the lack of truffle flavor. Yeah, truffles are expensive, but c’mon.”
• “The least offensive—and least exciting.”
• “A more tangy Sour Cream & Onion. Tasty. Wavy Lay’s for this flavor were a good decision.”
-
Southern Biscuits and Gravy: 23/40 points
Can a breakfast favorite translate to chip form? Apparently so. Is that a good thing? We were pretty polarized in our opinions.
• “This is less a chip than an enigma. I can’t tell if it’s good, and eating more only complicates things.”
• “Why?”
• “For people who like gravy: Yay! For people who have had traumatic gravy experiences on road trips: Ugh.”
• “Kinda boring, which I never expected from a biscuits and gravy chip.”
• “Reminds me of the biscuits and gravy I’d get from McDonald’s as a kid in Indiana. Go ahead, judge me."
• “Less calories than the real thing? Sign me up!"
-
Greektown Gyro: 23/40 points
Another sandwich chip, another polarizing flavor. Our crew definitely didn’t agree on the deliciousness (or nastiness) of the pita-inspired variety.
• “This chip is too salty, but I can actually taste the cucumber and a hint of ‘gyro’ meat, so that’s … interesting.”
• “Nothing about this tastes like a gyro. And the kettle cooked chip is not the appropriate vessel for these wrong flavors.”
• “Whoa! Surprising waves of flavor—the feta, the lamb, a squeeze of lemon. Weirdly powerful.”
• “Cool Ranch. Where is Greektown?”
• “The more I eat these the less I like them.”
