In a city driven by and revolving around the female form, it’s no surprise beauty is big business in Las Vegas. Between the Strip and the suburbs, the city has no shortage of waxing, tanning and hair salons striving to make both women and men look and feel their best. The one place these services are missing? Downtown.
But if you’ve walked past the Ogden recently, you might have noticed a bedazzled magenta sign with the word “Bombshell” emblazoned on its outer façade. Bombshell is Downtown’s latest Downtown Project-related venture, touted as the area’s only Brazilian waxing and beauty lounge. The full-service salon opened on February 13 and specializes in waxing, sugaring, makeup and eyelashes, spray tans, facials, blowouts, haircuts and more.
Owner, master aesthetician and spray tan expert Melissa Black brings her fourth fluorescent pink, pin-up-themed salon to Vegas all the way from Virginia, where she’s already made a name for herself with three successful Bombshell locations. For Black, Bombshell is all about high-quality, affordable services in a fun and spunky environment.
“We really took a leap of faith,” Black says, who started eyeing a location Downtown in 2012. “When we first started looking down here I was like God, I love it. I like that grittiness.” And although she hails from Virginia, she’s hoping to bring back that old Vegas flavor, one Brazilian wax at a time. “My grandma lived here when I was young, and I would come here all the time—that’s what [inspired] the Rat Pack and pin-up look. My parents would drop us off at Circus Circus, [and] I remember peering down and looking at all the women all dressed up—because they were very dressy back then. It’s my best memories, the music, the whole thing.”
