Start the new year with these sweet treats

There’s no better way to start 2021 than to treat yourself to these sweet spots that opened in the year that shall not be named. These doughnuts (or a variation thereof) are highly portable, which means you can grab a box, pair with some coffee and speed away to a socially distant location, where you can eat with zero guilt.

Wicked Donuts

Master pastry chef Robert Teddy opened his gourmet shop in Summerlin over the summer, and these doughnuts live up to their name in the most delicious way. The handcrafted breakfast treats are made with ingredients free of preservatives and artificial colors, starting with quality flour, organic milk and European-style butter. Choose from classics like glazed, chocolate and maple iced; fancy doughnuts like lemon poppy cake and mojito; and premium selections like lemon meringue pie and a red velvet buttermilk cake doughnut called She Devil Cake. There are even spotlight doughnuts such as Cointreau Creme Brulee and Blue Suede Banana, a tribute to the King—with peanut butter and banana creme, naturally. 9490 W. Lake Mead Blvd., 725-204-8615.

Jo’s Malasadas

Malasadas are a Portuguese twist on the doughnut. It’s essentially a fried dough ball that can be filled or simply coated with sugar and cinnamon. Jo’s offers a variety of fillings, including guava, strawberry, macadamia nut, Nutella and ube. There are also Filipino desserts such as Puto Ube and Puto Flan, and pandesal rolls that can be filled with cheese or taro. But the sweetness doesn’t stop there; cannoli, French eclairs, Hawaiian coco puffs, macarons, Napoleons, cookies and cake pops round out the global selection. For those craving something savory, there’s also light breakfast fare (Spam musubi, bagel and egg sandwich and more) and noodles for lunch. 6370 W. Flamingo Road #20, 702-202-0876.

Blooming Buns Bakehouse

A hybrid treat is never a bad thing. Take the brionut—essentially a filled doughnut with a brioche base. At Blooming Buns Bakehouse in Centennial, brionuts come in flavors such as chocolate velvet mousse, creme brulee, ube coconut cream and yema caramel honeycomb. If a cookie is more your jam, then the CookieBuns—massive mounds of dough in flavors like chocolate chip, walnut chocolate chip, triple dark chocolate or ube roasted almonds—should fit the bill. Wash them down with some of that fantastic Intelligentsia coffee, and you have the start of a very good morning. 7785 N. Durango Drive #130, 702-444-4801.
