Halloween EP

Wanna totally freak out your neighborhood? Blare this out into the street while kids are trick-or-treating. The Halloween-themed six-song CD from Vegas experimental champions Dino Ayala and Ron Rierson isn’t so much frightening as it is freakish, with the pair re-imagining six spooky “classics” related to the October 31 holiday.

Four are culled from films (Halloween, Psycho, Bram Stoker’s Dracula), one from a television series (Tales From the Crypt) and another from a video game (Super Mario Bros.). Yet while elements of the originals—the bone-chilling staccato violin from Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho theme, for example—remain recognizable, Anamorphosis’ takes are distant cousins at most, the result of untold MIDI, sequencer and loop tinkering beneath the duo’s own live instrumentation.

In other words, it’s not exactly music for most folks’ everyday routines, but it’s ideal for this time of year. And who knows? Play it loud enough and you might not have to give away as much candy.
