Nightlife news & notes: Playboy Club closing, Malibu Red and more

After six years of operation, the iconic club will close its doors this summer.

Sure, Toby Keith and 50 Cent were in town last week for the annual Nightclub & Bar Convention, hocking Wild Shot Mezcal and Street King Energy Shots, respectively, but the celebrity appearance that really caught our eye was local boy Ne-Yo. The R&B crooner is the face of Malibu Red, the new coconut rum-tequila hybrid that was unveiled at the trade show. Malibu suggests drinking the new booze with ginger ale and lime. And according to his Twitter feed, Ne-Yo suggests drinking it … a lot.

Perhaps the failure of the short-lived TV series The Playboy Club should have been an omen. Last week, the Palms announced that its own Playboy Club, a partnership between the casino and Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Enterprises, will close its doors this summer after six years of operation. The club, where servers don the classic bunny outfit as refashioned by designer Roberto Cavalli, is part of a long history of affiliated venues, which dates back to the original Chicago Playboy Club’s opening on February 17, 1960. The Las Vegas Playboy Club will shake its last bunny tail and bid us goodbye in early June.
