How will we get through summer without Gelato Messina?

Bad news first: The creative collaboration between Simon Hospitality Group and Titan Brands, Standard & Pour, has closed. The Anthem-area restaurant and bar opened in August 2016 and was named one of Las Vegas Weekly’s Best New Restaurants of the Year. It was the last restaurant project the late chef Kerry Simon worked on.

Another significant loss of deliciousness: Gelato Messina shuttered at Downtown Summerlin. Its Australian parent company had previously closed its Ribs & Burgers outlet at the outdoor mall, too.

The good news: Lots of new stuff has arrived Downtown. In the spot formerly known as Glutton, 7th & Carson is up and running, thanks to Liam Dwyer (Light Group) and chef Gregg Fortunato (Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, Inyo Asian Fusion). A few doors down, Mediterranean eatery Two Bald Brothers has opened where Zydeco Po-boys previously operated. And in the John E. Carson building a block away, the Donut Bar operators have taken over the former GrassRoots space with Smooth Eats, serving juices, smoothies, paninis and more.

Shake Shack will open its fourth location in Southern Nevada on July 12 at the District at Green Valley Ranch. In keeping with the company’s community-minded mission, the Henderson Shack will donate 5 percent of sales from its Pie Oh My concrete dessert to Three Square food bank.

Major League Baseball All-Star Week is apparently a big deal for Metro Pizza, or maybe it’s just a great excuse for experimental pizza enthusiast Chris Decker to get experimental with pizza. His Chicago Dog pie, with all-beef hot dogs, giardiniera, tomatoes and celery salt on a poppy seed crust, is available July 7-11 at the northwest, Green Valley, Tropicana and Decatur locations.
