In some respects, photojournalists are no different than anyone else. We hang around the watercooler (more often a coffee shop or bar) and complain about the state of our industry. Where we differ is that, after 15 minutes of bitching, we usually circle back to how fortunate we are to have the job we have. Or, as a friend said the other night, “It’s like we get to go on a school field trip every day.”

That’s one of the things I love about my profession. I get to show people how things work and places they wouldn’t normally see. We usually get our assignments the night before, so when I got my assignment to shoot the Desert Mermaids’ practice for our new weekly publication The Sunday, I knew I had to shoot it underwater and made sure I had time to go back to a practice session the next week with scuba gear.
