You need to eat these chicken-fried steak nachos

If you don’t make nachos with spicy sausage gravy, you’re doing it wrong.

At the end of a road to nowhere—a not-so-oft-traveled six-lane stretch of Cactus between Buffalo and Rainbow—is Our Families Country Cafe. This small, family-run joint is similar to ones found throughout Tennessee except that, instead of being in the Southern United States, it’s near Southern Highlands.

Serving what’s most likely the Valley’s best chicken-fried steak—an exquisitely battered, flattened steak smothered in just-so-rightly spiced sausage gravy—wasn’t good enough for Country Cafe. No. They felt it necessary to create their very own Island of Doctor Moreau by combining chicken-fried steak with nachos. The result is exactly what you would expect. This mutated monstrosity shouldn’t work, but it does. Sausage gravy melds with jack and cheddar cheeses atop tortilla chips with jalapeños and bacon added in for good measure. It’s a beautiful mess of smokiness and meatiness you’ll be craving. Perfection, thy name is country fried steak nachos.

Our Families Country Cafe 10591 S. Rainbow Blvd., 270-8700. Daily, 8 a.m.- 9 p.m.
