Gelatology brings dessert art to the southwest Valley

February 28 was a sad day for my family. That’s when Art of Flavors, our favorite gelato spot in town, emptied its freezers and shut its doors.

The Downtown shop has since reopened, but we haven’t made it back. We’ve been waiting, for Desyree Alberganti, the chef behind its addictive gelato recipes, to resurface somewhere. This month, it happened.

Over the weekend, we made our first visit to Alberganti’s newly opened spot, Gelatology, on Rainbow Boulevard south of Warm Springs Road. In her usual tradition, Alberganti began handing out samples on spoons from behind the colorful gelato case the moment we walked through the door: salt and caramel, extra virgin olive oil, Fruit Loops …

My daughter went with cookies ’n cream and birthday cake, my wife paired Nutella hazelnut and millefoglie (thousand layers) and I, well, I stuck with my usual—pistachio. It’s so good, I’ve been known to call ahead to make sure it’s in.

Everything I tried was up to Alberganti’s usual, scrumptious standards (especially the pistachio!), and the new spot is bright and inviting, with lots of easy parking out front. Less than three hours before we can go back for more ...
