Dining News & Notes: Blue Ribbon switching it up and Halal Guys coming to Vegas

Blue Ribbon serves Southern-style fried chicken at Brooklyn Bowl and Downtown Summerlin, but the unique bird at Blue Ribbon’s Cosmopolitan restaurant might not be long for our world.

As expected, things will change at Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, a popular spot since it opened with the Cosmopolitan resort in late 2010. Cosmo is adding a new sushi and Japanese restaurant, Zuma, later this year, one of several high-profile dining additions including the wildly anticipated Momofuku. A statement from the resort last week notes that Blue Ribbon and Cosmo are “working together to develop an exciting new concept in the restaurant’s current location. The venue will temporarily close for these changes in late 2016 and expects to make more information available in the coming months.”

Ku Noodle at SLS is done. The beautifully white, super-tasty Asian restaurant by chef José Andrés will close on April 1. An SLS statement reports the resort and Andrés' ThinkFoodGroup "have mutually agreed to close Ku Noodle" and SLS "looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Chef Andrés on the award-winning Bazaar Meat and working together on the property's evolving dining offerings."

The Halal Guys, a famous New York City chicken and gyro joint, is expanding across the country and around the globe, and that includes its first-ever location in Las Vegas, set to open this summer at the corner of Spring Mountain Road and Valley View Boulevard.

The Blind Pig unveiled a new look and menu with a grand re-opening party on St. Patrick’s Day. Located at the Panorama Towers just west of the Strip, the restaurant/pub now has more dining space and TV screens for sports and other programming, outdoor patio service, a new chef in Thomas Dantonio and a diverse, Italian-centric menu.

The monthly wine-dinner series at Giada returns on March 23 with a pairing of Silver Oak Winery wines with multiple courses of antipasti, pasta and more. The next event on April 20 will feature Joseph Phelps Vineyards. Tickets are $200 and reservations are required by calling 855-442-3271.

Beginning on March 28, select Yard House locations across the country—including ours here in Las Vegas—will be pouring Sam Adams Utopias, a biennial beer released in very limited quantities that retails for nearly $200 a bottle. Most locations will have 12-24 servings—2-ounce pours for $22—and nothing more to spare.

Jaleo at Cosmopolitan will host a CVNE wine dinner on March 31. Compania Vinicola Del Norte de Espana is one of the oldest wineries in Spain’s Rioja wine region, and the five-course meal will celebrate its history of excellence. Tickets are $100 and reservations are required by calling 702-698-7000.

Le Diner en Blanc, a highly sought-after “secret” pop-up epicurean event started in Paris nearly 30 years ago, is returning to Las Vegas. It popped up here four years ago for Top Chef Masters and will be back on April 17 at a location to be determined. Would-be guests must register on the waiting list at dinerenblanc.info.
