Say this for the folks booking the Cosmopolitan: They know how to go big on New Year's Eve.

Today, the hip Strip property announced that the Red Hot Chili Peppers will close out 2012 in the hotel's Chelsea Ballroom, following in the champagne-toasting footsteps of Coldplay and Jay-Z in 2010 and Stevie Wonder last year on the same stage. Tickets for the show start at $150 and go on sale Friday, September 7 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster and the Cosmopolitan's website.

The Chili Peppers, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, began as an underground funk-rock outfit in LA before growing to become one of the best-selling bands in the world. Their past six albums have reached the top 5 of the Billboard 200, most recently 2011's I'm With You, which peaked at No. 2.

The Chili Peppers have staged several memorable Las Vegas performances, including a 2002 New Year's Eve show inside the old Joint and 2005's Las Vegas centennial celebration near Sam Boyd Stadium.

The band's current lineup consists of longtime members Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Michael "Flea" Balzary (bass) and Chad Smith (drums), along with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who officially joined in 2010.
