As We See It

Nevada Firearms Coalition reveals its Second Amendment license plate design

The snow-capped Sierras, a bighorn sheep, the Hoover Dam and … a rifle-wielding minuteman?

As Nevadans, we have a lot of options when it comes to what's depicted on our license plates, and soon a colonial militia soldier could join the mix. Chosen as the best of four “Protect the Second Amendment” specialty-plate contenders in a public contest through the Nevada Firearms Coalition, the winning design was revealed January 21 and will be submitted to the Nevada DMV for approval.

Brought to the Coalition by State Sen. Don Gustavson, the design was created by his son and received 2,250 votes—roughly 44 percent of the total 5,075 votes cast in the contest.

“I’m thrilled with the design choice,” Nevada Firearms Coalition President Don Turner said in a news release. “We can’t wait to bring this proposal to the DMV to get the process started, and eventually see these license plates on roads across our great state.”

The design features the minuteman surrounded by the state’s official Battle Born motto on a mountainous backdrop, with “Protect the Second Amendment” emblazoned under the plate number. The contest raised more than $5,000, which covers the surety-bond cost to propose a specialty plate.

Weekly previously reported that the plate could still be rejected by the DMV (though Turner is “pretty sure there will be no problems with the design”), and is currently 11th on the department’s specialty-plate waiting list.
