The cult of ‘Sister Act 2’

About 10 years ago, I started a new life policy: I resolved that whenever somebody asked me what my favorite movie was, I’d reply, “Sister Act 2, Back in the Habit.”

I didn’t dislike the movie, but I sure didn’t love it. It’s cheesy, it’s unrealistic and it’s predictable. Sure, it’s got a good soundtrack, and character actor Michael Jeter, but it’s crappy, right?

Not so fast. In college I bought a Sister Act 2 DVD and watched it a couple times. I started to ironically appreciate its cheesiness and predictability, and before long, the irony faded and I began to straight-up love the damn film.

Now, it really is my favorite movie.

There’s just so much to like. You want inspiration? Watch the “Oh Happy Day!” scene. You want motivation? Listen to Sister Mary Clarence give the Mary Had a Little Lamb speech. You want drama? Watch Lauryn Hill sing “Joyful, Joyful.”

I’m starting to wonder if my purpose on earth is to turn Sister Act 2 into a cult film. I badly want to run midnight screenings. I badly want people to show up dressed as nuns. I want them to wave their hands back and forth when Frankie says, “Heyyyyy, Hoooooo, Heyyyyy, Hoooo…,” and I want them to step clap during the gospel numbers.

How do I make this happen?
