Dining News & Notes: Speedway barbecue, Due Forni at your house, and more

Due Forni is taking its custom pizza oven on the road.

Just in time for this weekend’s racing season kickoff, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Levy Restaurants have unleashed a new barbecue menu to satisfy racing fans. Specialty items created by chef Howard Smulo include the Bucket o’BBQ ($9), a pile of smoked brisket, chicken or pulled pork with cherry peppers, potato salad, coleslaw and signature Levy barbecue sauce in a waffle bowl. There’s also barbecue tri-tip sausage ($10); a Reuben sausage ($10) of corned beef topped with sauerkraut and Tapatio Thousand Island dressing; and the “Walkin’ Taco” ($6), beef, jalapeños, lettuce, salsa, cheese sauce and sour cream served inside a Doritos bag.

Dominant upscale neighborhood video poker bar Sierra Gold, operated by PT’s Entertainment Group, has created new menu items available at all four locations. Sierra Gold is known for its sliders, and now there are more options, including pastrami Reuben, chili cheese, green chile and roast beef. The bar also adds the Big Boy Burger with fried mozzarella, bacon, cheddar cheese, chicken fingers, cheese sauce and a fried egg. Whew. There’s also the Kendrick, oven-roasted turkey and beef on sourdough, and new salad and rice bowl options offering Thai curry shrimp, fajita chicken or steak, or chicken teriyaki.

Due Forni is taking its custom Napolitano wood-fired brick oven on the road with a new gourmet pizza catering service. Imagine these guys setting up shop in your backyard and cranking out artisan pizzas made from imported Italian ingredients eery 90 seconds. The cost is $500 for the oven and chef plus a per-pizza charge at the same cost as restaurant menu pricing. For information, call 586-6500.

The recently opened second location of Naked City Pizza Shop (4608 Paradise Road) is off to a fast start with the first edition of its Brewsy Meal series, a four-course dinner paired with local beers, set for March 19. Brewers from Joseph James and Tenaya Creek will participate in the dinner, priced at $40 per person. For reservations, call 722-2241.

Sammy’s Restaurant & Bar in Green Valley is kicking off its new Sammy’s Social Club on March 26, a monthly event pairing a four-course dinner with drinks from a highlighted vineyard, distillery or brewery. First up for the event, starting at 7 p.m., are varieties of Moet & Chandon champagne with ahi poke, Brie and truffle oil pizza, herb-marinated flatiron steak and warm, crispy mini-donuts. The price is $60 per person and reservations can be made by calling 567-4000.

The Wolfgang Puck restaurant group will host its second annual Sip & Savor event in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of UNLVino on April 9 at Spago in the Forum Shops. All of six of Puck’s Las Vegas restaurants will be represented, along with the chef’s favorite wines, plus music, raffles and more. Tickets start at $225 and can be purchased by calling 369-6300.
