A ‘resistance expo’ provides purpose for budding activists

Image

It started as a huddle after the nationwide Women’s March in January. The goal was to keep the political momentum going. Six months later, one of the products of that objective is the What Can I Do? Resistance Expo, which will take place June 10 (10 a.m.-1 p.m., 1630 S. Commerce St.).

A collaboration between Southern Nevada Marches Forward, Battle Born Progress and the Culinary Workers Union, the event will be a one-stop shop for the resistance. “Democracy is more than a matter of casting your vote and letting the people elected do all the work, co-organizer Helen Havlin O’Reilly says. “We know now that everybody has to be active.”

The point of the expo is to make political action as easy as possible. Free to both attendees and exhibitors, the expo will host a plethora of causes. Confirmed organizations include, among others, Deserts Arts Action Coalition, Indivisible Paradise, Mi Familia Vota, Save Red Rock, Black Democratic Empowerment Project and Planned Parenthood of Southern Nevada.

“We feel very excited and very positive, says O’Reilly, 64, who first cut her teeth marching against the Vietnam War. “Whatever else I think about Donald Trump, he really has awakened a sleeping giant, and I’m thankful for that.”
