Useful either as a newcomer’s introduction or a hole-filler for longtime listeners, this rarities collection samples from all corners of the former Las Vegan’s peculiar sonic odyssey: hyper-literate folk ditties, found-sound oddities, spirited live cuts and lo-fi experiments. The tunes are accompanied by extensive liner notes that detail their origins and, like the 14 tracks themselves, cut a coherent swath through Smigel’s “hobby of music.”

Saturday’s free, all-ages show marks the disc’s official release; pick up a copy for $10 (they’re also available at jacobsmigel.com), if for no other reason than you need to hear the sublime “Johnny Tocco’s Ring Side Gym” a few dozen times before you throw your next punch.
