I’m passionate about whiskey. I’d call my myself a whiskey enthusiast, I’ve tasted at least 500 at this point and try to keep notes on all of them. I’ve always loved Old Forester, partially because of their long history – they’ve distilled whiskey before, during and after prohibition.

I’m lucky to have been working at Double Helix for nearly 4 years now because they have a huge whiskey selection, around 250 currently. I get to talk to whiskey lovers, and I get to help whiskey newcomers explore the different styles to see what suits them and educate them on whiskey, and sometimes even get educated by them as well.

The name I went with for the cocktail is “Winter's Bone,” that comes from an old Appalachian expression, “like a dog digging after a winter's bone,” which refers to someone who is on a search or quest for something and will not give it up. Winter was the theme, which is why I chose the Old Forester Rye from their wide selection. I feel that rye has a more winter-like spice, as opposed to bourbon. I also chose to infuse it with other winter flavors, like cinnamon and star anise. Apple and walnut bitters, and brown sugar as the sweetener, added to the holiday-flavor theme as well.

The cocktail has been described by guests as “Christmas in a glass.” It’s a spirit-forward Old Fashioned with a winter twist.
