A first look at Henderson’s new World of Beer

I was completely overwhelmed when I sat down at the bar in Henderson’s brand new World of Beer. I’m indecisive about what will satiate my palate, so when I discovered there are around 50 beers on tap and more than 500 bottles to choose from, it took at least 30 minutes to order my first drink.

Born and raised in Henderson, I’m surprised and pleased this tavern has been added to the local landscape. You can’t go anywhere else around here and find such a massive selection, and prices are reasonable. If you don’t feel like drinking at the bar, you’ll soon be able to take bottles home with you.

Founded in Tampa, Florida, World of Beer has nearly 100 locations across the country; this is Nevada’s first and WOB’s most western venue. It opened three weeks ago with relaxed ambiance, patio seating and an eclectic, industrial design. The grand opening is set for October 27 at 4 p.m.

If you plan on checking it out, which I recommend you do, here are a few things to keep in mind:

• There’s a cask engine that dispenses beer by gravity only and contains live yeast, which adds new flavors and complexities to the beer as it ferments. The current brew, which will be unveiled at the grand opening, is Stone's Sublimely Self-Righteous Cask, an 8.7 percent ABV black IPA aged in Spanish cedar and Papua New Guinea coffee. WOB also has daily infusions like cider run through fresh oranges and raspberries. These selections will continuously rotate.

• If you crave a Japanese IPA with 6 percent ABV, you can easily find it. The iPad menus have many filters you can apply. Categories include style and color of beer, country of origin,s bottled or tap, new arrivals and hard-to-find selections. The WOB app helps you keep track of which beers you’ve tried, too.

• Forget any negative assumptions you have about pumpkin ale (I’ve struggled to find a great one, too). WOB currently carries Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale, and it’s hands down the best I’ve had. Plus, it’s finally starting to feel like fall, and why order a pumpkin spice latte when you can drink beer?

• The food selection is diverse. Hofbrauhaus isn’t the only place to order bratwurst and oversized Bavarian pretzels.

• The tavern features live music from local musicians, and when no one’s onstage, the playlist is unique. I listened to OutKast (not “Hey Ya!”) and MGMT (not “Kids”) while sipping a few brews.
