Is the Mormon church campaigning against Question 2?

You’d think the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had learned its lesson after getting caught trying to steer California voters toward voting for a same-sex marriage ban in 2008 (see documentary 8: The Mormon Proposition). But high-ranking Mormon brass seem to be once again trying to work around pesky no-politicking rules by which untaxed nonprofits must abide. An apparent email by the president of an unidentified local stake (or group of wards) asking church members to both donate to a new anti-marijuana PAC—its home base a mere block from the Valley’s Mormon Temple—and attend what’s clearly a forum skewed against the pro-legalization Question 2 was recently posted on the r/exmormon subreddit.

The post includes a retraction by the same president, based on an email by local quorum elders (also shared on Reddit): “The Church has not taken a position on the matter and no endorsement of a position was intended.” A wise reversal, but if you don’t believe the seeds of ballot influence have nonetheless been planted, you might be high yourself.
